One of prominent techniques of
Assisted Reproductive Technique is ICSI. In case fertilization doesn’t occur by
placing processed sperms near oocytes in petridish, sperms are directly
injected. Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) differs from
conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the way that the ICSI expert
selects a single sperm to be injected directly into an egg, instead of
fertilization taking place in a dish where many sperm are placed near an egg.
ICSI is required to be performed in case of low sperm,
unexplained failures, unsuccessful fertilization previously, structural
difficulties of sperm, immotility of sperm, sperms obtained through electro
ejaculation or from azoo-spermic patients (patients with almost nil sperm
production), etc.
ICSI is a very complicated and delicate procedure that
requires steps involving sperm and egg extraction (may or may not be surgical),
injection of single sperm into the egg through very thin hollow pipe like injection
and then implantation of embryo into the womb with the help of latest
scientific medical equipment such as the inverted microscope and
micromanipulator along with setting and aligning of the injection and holding
pipettes. Therefore it must be carried out with only an experienced ICSI
expert.
Though there are a lot of ICSI experts in India but one
should be careful before choosing one. Although the most of the process is
carried outside your body still its success is mainly dependent upon the ICSI
technician. Not just well trained but well experienced doctor should be chosen.
