Intra Uterine Insemination or IUI is the process of placing washed and prepared semen of the male partner or the donor into the uterus in an attempt to achieve pregnancy. When due to any reason, sperm are unable to reach the female reproductive tract then through IUI this is made possible.

For this the patient may need to undergo, routine blood tests, hormone analysis, HIV/Hepatitis tests, semen analysis, anti-sperm anti-bodies, ultrasound, etc.

Although IUI is a fairly simple process, still a lot of care and attention to details is needed. Ovulation induction must be done just prior to insemination and just at the right time sperms are introduced into female reproductive tract through a catheter. However, preparation is needed for both the partners. Sperm should be collected properly and hygienically after following the advisory regarding sex abstinence, diet, sleep and other things. Female partner needs to undertake ovulation induction program administered through oral drugs and injectibles. The IUI expert should ensure that the precautions and instructions regarding this preliminary stage is made clear to the couple and is properly followed.

Couples are advised and counseled to keep a watch for any symptoms of pregnancy. It may take anywhere between 6-12 weeks after insemination to conceive.
